NYC Mission Society
The NYC Mission Society needed not only to update their old logo, but to create a special “200 years” logo to celebrate their upcoming anniversary. The new logo needed to visually represent the organization as a social service agency helping disadvantaged children and youth in the New York City area to become self-reliant and successful. With this particular project, we needed to avoid visual references to the religious connotations of the word “mission,” as well as the visual pitfalls of typical social service agency logos such as people holding hands, etc. (human figures are especially problematic as they do not convey the range of age, gender, and ethnicity that NYC Mission Society serves).
The final design uses heavy, 3D-looking logotype to convey an urban sensibility—but tilts that type at a slight angle to make appear to be floating. This treatment helps to convey a hopeful, joyous feeling which is aided by the bright colors and the cheerful sunburst, making a design that is youthful without being too young.
